Research by Adam Hartstone-Rose and colleagues at the University of South Carolina who compared the bite forces of nine different cat species reveals that a jaguars bite force is only three-quarters as strong as a tigers bite force. The term big cat is typically used to refer to any of the five living members of the genus Panthera namely the tiger lion jaguar leopard and snow leopard as well as the non-pantherine cheetah and cougar and sometimes the clouded leopard. Their territories can extend to 450sq km though in the prey-rich Mara rarely exceed 76sq km.
It is about half the size of the domestic cat. Males weigh between 80 150 pounds and females between 60 100 pounds. At one time it ranged from the Yukon in Canada to the Strait of Magellan at the tip of South America.
Males also range much further than females. Its pale golden coat is covered in distinctive rosettes which unlike those of the Jaguar are not filled with spots. However only the first 4 of these species are able to roar.
